Don’t Leave Just Yet: Festival to Host H1N1 Vaccinations Friday

HARRISONBURG, Va. — The University Health Clinic will offer the H1NI vaccination Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m at the Festival Highlands Room.
The vaccine was originally scheduled for Nov. 13, but vaccines were not available to the UHC. However, Intravene Travel Clinic, based in Lynchburg, received a shipment of the vaccine Monday and will bring 3,800 vaccines to JMU.
The vaccine costs $19.96 and is payable by cash, credit card or check. It is available to students, staff, faculty and family members over the age of 12.
Ann Simmons, UHC coordinator of marketing and programming, believes that even though the clinic falls on the Friday when students return home for Thanksgiving break, there will be a fair number of participants.
“There has been a short supply everywhere,” she said in regards to the amount of vaccines available.
It takes up to three weeks to build up the immunity against H1N1. Side effects of the vaccination include soreness, redness or swelling where the shot was given, fainting, headache, muscle aches, fever and nausea. If these problems occur, they usually begin soon after the shot and last one to two days.
Life-threatening allergic reactions to vaccines are rare, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If they do occur, it is usually within a few minutes to a few hours after the shot is given.
Intravene will return to campus Dec. 4 for another vaccination clinic, provided that the vaccination is available.
