Timely Notice?

Ten timely days later — that’s how quickly JMU Police & Public Safety notified students of an off-campus assault and battery. Thanks to a parent’s tip, students now know that three men, who allegedly beat up one male and one female student Nov. 7, are still at large.
JMU Police should have someone in constant contact with its city counterpart to respond to incidents like the one in Stone Gate. Of course, the city should have the wherewithal to notify JMU so students will be rightfully informed of such incidents.
Both forces must establish a system of cooperation and synch their efforts to protect and inform students. Ten days is nowhere near timely.

Got something to say?

I’m sorry. This is getting ridiculous. Do the editors of the Breeze have anymore complaint against the University? Assaults and batteries happen everyday in this country. A day does not go by where a student, faculty member, staff member or someone affiliated with them becomes a victim of some type of crime. If JMU gave timely notices for everything, our in-boxes would be filled everyday with every little penny any crime. This incident occurred off campus and was handled by the Harrisonburg police. How serious was the assault? Was it an isolated incident? Perhaps alcohol or drugs were involved? Could it have been a some type of domestic squabble? Was the JMU community as a while threatened by this incident?
I have no doubt if the JMU community were in serious jeopardy because of this assault and battery that a timely notice would have been swifter. We are all adults. We live in the real world. Assaults and batteries happen everyday. Protect yourself accordingly. But don’t expect JMU to send out a timely notice for everything.
I think the timely notices should come out sooner, however - what is the root of the complaint here? Am I going to receive an e-mail about an off-campus assault on Devon Lane and change ANYTHING I was planning to do? I don’t understand why this calls for an uproar, but a little more punctuality never hurt anybody.
I just want to say a big THANK YOU to whomever had the courage to write this article. I was the “female victim” assaulted in the incident. And YES, I do believe that the timely notice should have come much sooner. The complaint made in the article is well-based, for the safety of our community. The members of the JMU community especially have the “Right to Know” when outsiders from our community come to prey on The incident has greatly affected those involved and I am outraged by the way the Harrisonburg Police Department has been handling the case.
Regardless of my personal involvement, I think what the article is aiming at is the untimely matter in which we were notified. The three bastards involved in the case could come back and preyed on more people. The notices are to warn people to be safe and to know what to look for. So, again, thank you!
Again: a big THANK YOU!
