In its first ever meeting with Stanford, the Dukes’ men’s basketball team squandered an early lead and fell to the Cardinal 80-76. JMU came out strong from the opening tip, beginning the game on a 9-0 run on 4-for-4 shooting. Cardinal senior forward Landry Fields kept Stanford within striking distance with 15 first half points (24 total). Second-year coach Matt Brady lit fire with his halftime speech as a lethargic first-half squad turned into a monster after the break. JMU went on a 12-0 run to start the second half of an 85-73 win over the visiting Fordham Rams on Wednesday. “I went in there and challenged their pride more than anything,” Brady told WSVA radio following the game. Brief: Women’s Basketball Topples Longwood

JMU women’s basketball chalked up another victory Monday at home as it defeated the Longwood 85-67, staying ranked in the national polls at No. 25. Leading the way for the Dukes (8-1) was Dawn Evans. The junior guard had a game-high 32 points. Monday marked her third consecutive game with 30 or more points, leaving her tied for 10th place on JMU’s all-time scoring list. JMU women’s basketball has fought its way onto the national top-25 polls, ranked No. 24/25 Monday. Comeback wins against Georgetown and Va. Tech combined with an upset victory over Virginia left JMU’s record spotless — until now. Brief: Garner Resigns From JMU

Announced Tuesday, JMU volleyball coach Disa Garner has resigned from her position following a 10-year tenure with the school. This season, the Dukes started poorly and were unable to overcome the strong play of the Colonial Athletic Association and the tribulations of an inexperience squad, finishing 4-10 in the CAA and 11-19 overall. The JMU women’s basketball team tallied its seventh straight win Sunday without star Dawn Evans. The Dukes (7-0) as they never gave the lead up to Siena (1-7) and won 85-57. Junior guard Dawn Evans led the JMU women’s basketball team to a 75-73 win Sunday against #14/#15 Virginia. Evans tied the school record with 38 points. She scored 38 once before, in a postseason game in 2008. Tamera Young (’08) shares the record with her, also scoring 38 in a postseason game two seasons ago. Rave Draws Hundreds to East Campus Library

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Hundreds of JMU students tried to cure their studying ills by throwing a rave Sunday night in the lobby of the East Campus Library. The flash mob appeared about 9:35 p.m., with students arriving in the library in droves. It was quiet at first, but that changed after not even 10 minutes.
