HARRISONBURG, Va. —  Students shuffling through the commons in the past week have probably seen Theta Chi’s decorative table sporting multiple jars of donations to local charities. Behind that display, a small trailer offers a place for two fraternity brothers to sleep after a long day and night of pushing donations.   The 10-year-old philanthropy project collects donations for multiple organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity and Mercy House, a homeless shelter in downtown Harrisonburg.... Read more »

Controversial Chancellor Encourages Arts and Music HARRISONBURG, Va. — Having a teacher that cares about his or her young students and encourages them to go to college can make all the difference. That’s what Michelle Rhee, chancellor of the D.C. Public Schools, believes. After replacing teachers in one of the middle schools in the D.C. school system, she witnessed a complete change in the students’ attitudes. “I don’t know about you, but I had never met someone in middle school who actually... Read more »

Sharing Stories on the Dangers of Drinking HARRISONBURG, Va. — Alcohol kills 6.5 times more youths than all other illicit drugs combined. About 1,400 college students die each year in alcohol-related causes, and 25 percent of college students say drinking has caused them to fall behind in class and receive lower grades, according to statistics presented Wednesday. These statistics coupled with audience members’ personal encounters with drinking and driving painted a sobering picture at Wednesday’s... Read more »

The embodiment of the invincible “tough guy” image can be difficult to attain for any male athlete, but when one is gay, the struggle becomes more difficult. Brian Sims, currently a successful 31-year-old lawyer from Philadelphia, was the first openly gay college football team captain in NCAA history. He shared his story through an intimate speech in the Health and Human Services building Wednesday. Moving back to Harrisonburg to open up a restaurant and a skate shop would not be on the agenda for most people with a sociology degree from JMU and a theologian studies degree from Harvard. For Jeremiah Jenkins, however, the lifestyle is simply a creative outlet through which he can simultaneously earn a living and express himself. After moving to Harrisonburg to open up the musically and artistically eclectic Clementine Café in 2008, Jenkins realized how little downtown offers in terms of retail.... Read more »

Sajani Shakya is about 9-years-old, but has her own throne from which she sits and watches children and elders worship her. They adamantly thrust their praises and humble possessions at her feet in exchange for her blessing. Even her mother worships her daily, never addressing her by a name other than ‘goddess’.   In the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, ‘living goddesses’ are young girls who high priests declare as the incarnation of Kali, a Hindu goddess widely known for her destruction of sin.... Read more »

Eight Years After the 9/11 Attack, Surviving Firefighters Suffer Medical Conditions as a Direct Result of Clean-up In honor of the eight-year anniversary of 9/11, it is customary to have a moment of silence for those who lost their lives during the tragedies that deeply penetrated America’s relatively stable sense of security and invincibility.  Although we have our surroundings of that day forever etched in our minds, it often acts as a trigger of thoughts of the war in Iraq, this idea of... Read more »
