Editor Obsession

If you are an avid member of the Colbert nation, you know it made its way to snowy Vancouver for Stephen Colbert’s Vancouverage 2010 of the Winter Olympics. With his snarky commentary and blithe bantering interviews, Colbert carried his classy style all the way to the British Columbia city. I’m not one to closely follow the Winter Olympics, but somehow Colbert made me care that some guy named Apolo Ohno won his seventh speed skating medal. Filmed live in the Colbert Report International Broadcast... Read more »
Pet-Friendly Policies Save Animals
By Anna Young, Managing EditorNovember 12, 2009
My roommate and I are animal people. At some point in our childhood, we wanted to be veterinarians — before we realized that requires way too much math and science in our education. Even so, we have grown up around animals and have always been avid pet lovers. Unfortunately, she and I have been unable to own a pet since attending JMU because of no-pet policies on campus and at our off-campus residences. We planned to get a cat this year when we moved into a spacious house downtown. You can imagine... Read more »

For Newspapers, Beginning of The End
By Anna Young, Managing EditorMarch 5, 2009
Quick, someone buy the San Francisco Chronicle! And I’m not talking about at the nearest newspaper stand. The historic 144-year-old daily, the Bay area’s oldest and largest newspaper, is on the verge of going bankrupt if it doesn’t find a buyer or make some serious changes, including severely cutting its staff and resources and outsourcing its print job to Canada. To those who haven’t been following the drastic decline of print media, the Chronicle’s plight may seem like its own breaking... Read more »

What and who decides whether classes are canceled? HARRISONBURG, Va. — As students sloshed and slid to classes Wednesday morning, many wondered why classes were merely delayed two hours instead of being canceled entirely, as they were on Tuesday. “I wouldn’t mind if classes were canceled,” said senior Mickey Tomar, who bikes from College Station to campus every day. “On the sidewalk I would do a little drifting, so I put myself at risk.” Tomar thought the university didn’t keep in... By Anna Young, Managing EditorJanuary 22, 2009
HARRISONBURG, Va.- Keyo Wilson may have been closer to President Barack Obama than anyone else from JMU Tuesday. The senior music education major was one of the honored few fortunate enough to perform in the 56th Presidential Inaugural Parade. “To say that I was a part of the first African American president’s parade in Washington, D.C. is something,” the Stafford native said. “I won’t forget every second of it… It’s not just any president’s parade but someone I actually voted for... Muslim Student Association leader explains misconceptions Every day, Soraya Salam starts her morning before dawn by praying. She then proceeds to pray during the early afternoon, again later in the afternoon, again right before sunset and right before she goes to sleep. Such is the life of a devout Muslim. “It’s really a blessing,” said Salam, a sophomore SMAD major who looks forward to the five daily prayer times. “It gives you a chance to reflect because in this world we all are distracted...
