Tribe Gives Free Lesson (Commentary)
By Tim Chapman, The BreezeMarch 7, 2010
JMU should learn from season-ending loss RICHMOND – In one word Pierre Curtis summed up the season as “inconsistent.” The senior is absolutely right. The most disheartening thing for Curtis and classmate Matt Parker is that the inconsistency was not only in the X’s and O’s. It was inconsistency in heart that plagued and an already injury-riddled team. It also had little to do with the seniors. The Dukes’ season is over after they blew a 14-point second-half lead in the quarterfinals... Read more »
Bowles Shows Up in First-round Win (Commentary)
By Tim Chapman, The BreezeMarch 6, 2010
RICHMOND – Former JMU standout Terrence Carter might be a prophet. At halftime of the Dukes’ first-round win over Drexel on Friday night, the former captain made a prediction. Like a wise sage, Carter said junior Denzel Bowles would take over in the second half. Bowles did. (And while the prediction was probably the same thing on the mind of every JMU fan, it was believable coming from Carter. He has always had an air of maturity unparallel to anyone else in the program’s recent years.) He... Read more »

PART 5: Turning Loss into Life: A Pierre Curtis Story
By Tim Chapman, The BreezeMarch 4, 2010
Part Five: Toughing it out with a smile, just like mom A new child meant more work over the summer for JMU senior Pierre Curtis and his girlfriend Rashonda Roberson. Pierre worked at UREC. Rashonda, a 2009 JMU graduate, started back at Old Navy, though she hopes to pursue a career in social work. “A lot of people get to have fun in the summer,” Pierre says. “I didn’t. I want to say I lived the real-world life. Shonda… she worked up until she had to stop working and she took the time... Read more »
PART 6: Turning Loss into Life: A Pierre Curtis Story
By Tim Chapman, The BreezeMarch 4, 2010
Part Six: Significance of jersey number increases with birth of daughter Enter Matt Brady — a basketball savvy 42-year-old on the rise in the coaching ranks. Known for tweaking the shooting touches of NBA stars Jameer Nelson and Delonte West while an assistant at St. Josephs in Philadelphia, Brady went on to prove himself as head coach at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In four seasons Brady turned a dismal program into an annual contender in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. When... Read more »

Part 4: Senior basketball player finds new perspective as proud father (Part 5 will run in Thursday’s issue. Part 6 will run Thursday on breezejmu.org. Parts 1-3, originally published in 2007, can be found below this article.) It is a cold Wednesday night in early February and an all-too-familiar scene for Pierre Curtis. As the clock winds down on an embarrassing defeat at home, he watches the lower sections of the Convocation Center empty. Season-ticket holders, disgusted and disappointed, leave... Read more »
Commentary: Admiral’s Record Sunk in Amazing Women’s Game
By Tim Chapman, The BreezeFebruary 22, 2010
More Needs to be Done for the Progress of Women’s Basketball; UConn is Hurting More Than Helping If only all the windows would align. If only the television windows that sparingly show Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball games had cracked for a Thursday night game that 2,550 people will never forget. If only a wider viewership witnessed what I will remember as “Dawn vs. Delle Donne” then the country, or at least the mid-Atlantic, would have gained a greater appreciation for the... Read more »
Commentary: Felony Charges Seem a Bit Much
By Tim Chapman, The BreezeFebruary 11, 2010
Kathy Landis isn’t afraid to speak her mind. The D-hall veteran can be found pouring her freshly made smoothies every morning, while telling “her football players” her latest thoughts on the upcoming season. In the last year she has also taken a liking to the rejuvenated men’s basketball program. So, it came as no surprise that her feelings on the famous felony snowball charges came flowing out as quickly as a banana smoothie. “I think it’s a bunch of bull crap,” Landis said when approached... Commentary: Let’s Just Hope He Relished the Moment
By Tim Chapman, The BreezeJanuary 19, 2010
Let’s be frank. The young man who threw the hot dog onto the court during Saturday’s 82-71 loss to George Mason is an idiot. The true wiener in the Convocation Center wasn’t the six-inch pork link scattered on the hardwood, but the JMU-clad halfwit who chucked it from about 30 rows up. Presumably a student, this guy may prompt JMU to consider a course called Common Sense 101. Did you seriously think you were going to get away with it? Not only was JMU in the midst of a comeback and on a 12-4... Read more »
Dukes Record First Conference Win Against Delaware
By Tim Chapman, The BreezeJanuary 5, 2010
HARRISONBURG – Delaware knew there would be two guys on JMU to key in Monday night, but execution isn’t as easy as reading a scouting report. Those two players, junior forward Denzel Bowles and sophomore swingman Julius Wells, proved lethal to the Blue Hens, scoring 26 and 24 points, respectively, in the Dukes 71-65 win. “These two guys can really score,” JMU coach Matt Brady said. “They have great confidence and their teammates have great confidence in them.” The team’s confidence...
