The JMU women’s basketball team will lose at least one more from its roster in addition to senior Sarah Williams. Sophomore guard Brittany Crowell of Brandywine, Md., decided to transfer in January for “personal reasons” and declined to comment beyond that. “She wants a fresh start and an opportunity to play more,” coach Kenny Brooks said. “She has not chosen a school yet and is getting ready to go through the process.” As a freshman, Crowell averaged 15 minutes per game. She led all... Read more »

Additions Provide Possibility to Defend CAA Title

By Emmie Cleveland,

Coach Kenny Brooks has preached that his team’s time was “NOW” since November. On Sunday the season’s theme was left on the Ted Constant Convocation Center floor when Temple handed JMU a first-round loss in the NCAA tournament. The Dukes’ time is no longer now; it is next season. Luckily for Brooks and company, next season holds player potential. The team will lose just one — its lone senior Sarah Williams. The guard was second on the team this year in 3-pointers made (40) and rebound... Read more »

Women’s Team Loses 65-53 to Temple in NCAA Tournament NORFOLK, Va. — Temple coach Tonya Cardoza attributes her team’s victory over JMU to boxing out the nation’s fifth-leading scorer. “I thought our guys did a great job sticking with the game plan and trying to keep the ball out of Dawn Evans’ hands as much as possible,” she said. “We went into the game saying that if they were going to win that they were going to do it with their other players. “I thought our guys did a helluva... Read more »

JMU Seizes First CAA Title in 20 Years

By Emmie Cleveland,

March 14, 2010

Dawn Evans played with an edge Sunday afternoon when she led her team to a 67-53 win over Old Dominion for the conference title. Drexel’s freshman Elena Delle Donne was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year. “You know what, I’m not going to be political about it, yes. Yes I did,” Evans said when asked if not winning the award motivated her in the tournament. “I felt I had something to prove. How better can I put this but to say a championship proves it.” Evans, who was... Read more »

HARRISONGBURG — A Jay-Z song echoed throughout the locker room as the JMU women’s basketball team celebrated its 79-70 win over VCU in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament. “We played that song again — ‘On to the Next One’ — because we got one more,” JMU coach Kenny Brooks said. Season Extends for JMU Dive

By Emmie Cleveland,

March 1, 2010

On the first day of the conference finale, the JMU dive team competed in the 3-meter dive and placed four in the top six, putting JMU ahead early. But the Colonial Athletic Association championships were a four-day event and a collaboration of swim and dive performances. At the end of the meet, JMU fell to third behind two-time reigning champion Towson and UNC-Wilmington. “On the swimming side of it, I really don’t know much about what they did and if they couldn’t have gotten more points,”... Read more »

By Emmie Cleveland,

February 22, 2010

How Will the Dukes Compensate for the Untimely Loss of Corwin Acker? JMU football coach Mickey Matthews had high hopes for his 2008 running back recruit Corwin Acker. “He’s the most highly recruited running back we’ve ever signed here,” he said on his Web site once Acker had committed. “It remains to be seen how he develops, but we just really have high hopes for him in the future.” But Matthews’ hopes fell drastically short as he dismissed his back up running back from the team last... Read more »

A circular cage was set up at half court, two big screens decorated the sidewalls, disco lights illuminated the pulled-out wooden bleachers and rock music blared through the speakers. The event put on by promotion company Respect Is Earned lacked an intangible aspect which held it from living up to the intense environment it strived for — until Jessie Riggleman was announced. The atmosphere changed drastically... Read more »
