Brief: JMU Falls Short Against The Tribe
By Emmie Cleveland,January 15, 2010
Junior Denzel Bowles led JMU with 26 points and 13 rebounds in Thursday’s game at William & Mary. However, his double-double was not enough to lead the short-handed team to a win. The Dukes (2-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association, 8-8 overall) recorded a 85-78 loss to the Tribe and returned their season to .500. With only eight active on its roster, JMU’s starters played an exhausting game. Senior Pierre Curtis had 40 minutes, while freshman Darren White and sophomore Julius Wells... Read more »

By Emmie Cleveland,January 15, 2010
The JMU women’s basketball team came back from a 7-point deficit, sent the game into overtime and eventually got the 72-68 win over Towson on Thursday night. JMU (3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, 13-2 overall), up by just two at halftime, let Towson go up seven points with just less than three minutes remaining. Junior guard Dawn Evans, who scored 30 points total, sent the game into overtime at 60-60. The Dukes outscored the Tigers 12-8 in overtime to secure the win. Evans’... Read more »
Dukes Beat The Big Dogs
By Emmie Cleveland,January 14, 2010
After a 16-point first-half deficit, the JMU women’s basketball put away Big East’s Georgetown with a last-minute comeback in its season opener. The game has epitomized the team’s season thus far — playing great halves but not full games and racking wins over big names. “I think we come out of the block strong, playing well against some of the bigger teams,” JMU coach Kenny Brooks said. “We’ve also got little things we need to work on. Running our plays a little better, being more... Read more »
Dukes Advance to JMU Invitational Championship Game
By Emmie Cleveland,December 30, 2009
Though ending in blowout win for the JMU women’s basketball team, there remained something significant to be taken from the 86-54 victory over Lafayette. “They presented a challenge just because of their style of play,” JMU coach Kenny Brooks said over the phone. “They rely on a lot of backdoor cuts, and it’s actually a good situation to help prepare us for [conference] play.” JMU’s first Colonial Athletic Association game is Sunday against projected conference-winner, Drexel. Madison... Read more »
Women’s Basketball Blemishes Perfect Record
By Emmie Cleveland,December 19, 2009
JMU women’s basketball has fought its way onto the national top-25 polls, ranked No. 24/25 Monday. Comeback wins against Georgetown and Va. Tech combined with an upset victory over Virginia left JMU’s record spotless — until now. JMU (7-1) recorded its first loss of the season Friday, finishing 79-65 against the No. 7/8 Blue Devils (8-2) at Durham, N.C. “When you play the No. 7 ranked team in the country on their home floor, you got to put together a complete game,” JMU coach Kenny... Brief: Women’s Basketball Rallies to Beat Virginia
By Emmie Cleveland,December 7, 2009
Junior guard Dawn Evans led the JMU women’s basketball team to a 75-73 win Sunday against #14/#15 Virginia. Evans tied the school record with 38 points. She scored 38 once before, in a postseason game in 2008. Tamera Young (’08) shares the record with her, also scoring 38 in a postseason game two seasons ago. Virginia took the lead at the opening of the game, but the Dukes fought back, heading into the second half up 39-34. After JMU improved its lead in the first four minutes of the second... Read more »
Another Comeback Victory for Women’s Basketball
By Emmie Cleveland,November 24, 2009
In last season’s game against Virginia Tech, the JMU women’s basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss. A 3-pointer put Madison ahead by two. Then, in the last second, a Tech player heaved a half-court shot. The shot missed, but she went to the foul line, where she sent the game into overtime for a 72-70 loss for JMU. This year, the Dukes (2-0) clinched a 66-59 victory in their Sunday matchup at the Convocation Center. The win ended a 9-game losing streak to the Hokies (2-2). “We just... Read more »
Commentary: Season Eye-Opener
By Emmie Cleveland,November 19, 2009
HARRISONBURG, Va. — You couldn’t have asked the JMU women’s basketball team for a better season-opener. A last-minute, 79-76, comeback win over Big East foe Georgetown University sent the crowd into a frenzy of excitement and chills down my arms. The first two plays Wednesday night epitomized the entire first half of the game. Georgetown’s Ta’Shauna “Sugar” Rodgers sank a 3. JMU inbounded the ball, and junior point guard Dawn Evans turned it over. By the end of the... Read more »
Dukes Look to Improve Defense
By Emmie Cleveland,November 14, 2009
If the JMU women’s basketball team plays defense in its season opener like it did in the second half of Friday’s exhibition game, it will be an embarrassment, according to coach Kenny Brooks. That being said, JMU did walk away with a 84-63 victory against University of California (Pa.) “For us, a win is a win,” junior point guard Dawn Evans said. “But we’d rather win in a prettier way.” Though a Division II school, California displays talent. The defending Pennsylvania State Athletic... Read more »
JMU Swim and Dive Make a Splash at Pod Meet
By Emmie Cleveland,November 9, 2009
JMU women’s swim and dive team season looks up after placing second of four through 13 events this weekend in its meet. Last year’s Colonial Athletic Association’s runner-up William & Mary clenched first place, coming back from behind JMU at its pod meet Saturday for a 190-161 win. “The first day after the two sessions, we were in first,” junior Lisa Colapietro said, “and all of us knew we were just racing up to our potential, and that we all did what we needed to do that day.” Overall,...
