HARRISONBURG, Va. — The road is long for many to reach JMU’s campus but only in real life. Thanks to an online virtual world called “Second Life,” JMU’s very own virtually recreated campus is just a click away. Last year, a group of JMU professors established the campus in the world of Second Life, a world of user-created residents, called “avatars,” that explore, meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, and create and trade merchandise, property... Read more »

His win and the GOP sweep of Virginia were celebrated Tuesday with hip-hop music thumping and beach balls bouncing amid a large crowd in downtown Richmond’s Marriot Inn. “Eight months ago I applied for the job of governor of Virginia,” McDonnell told the cheering crowd. “Tonight you have... Read more »

Foot-Power Avoids Tax

By Ford Prior, Contributing Writer

October 22, 2009

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Ben Wyse rides his bike up to 14 miles a day. However, what makes him special is not the miles he pedals, it’s his motivation behind it.   He rides because his next-best alternative — the car — comes with a self-imposed gas tax. He and eight other members of Harrisonburg’s Voluntary Gas Tax organization tax themselves, usually paying at least 50 cents a gallon, although they can pay whatever they choose since the tax is voluntary. It started at the dinner table at... Read more »

His home, leased with three other JMU students for $535 each per month, is entirely off the electrical grid. Also known as the Freedom House, the “zero-impact” dwelling owes itself to one man — Zach Fettig — who’s company, Shenandoah Sustainable Technologies (SST), LLC, carried Harrisonburg’s only self-sustaining home to its completion in 2008. “I banged... Read more »

By Ford Prior, Contributing Writer

October 15, 2009

For three weeks now, Katie McNelly has been constantly looking over her shoulder. After her roommate awoke Sept. 21 to a man standing over her bed, McNelly is at least thankful that the word is out: Lock the doors because midnight intruders could be out and about. After the man fled and police arrived that night, it was concluded that he entered through an unlocked door. More than 25 comments have since been posted online on the Oct. 8 Breeze article, “Students Awake to Intruder.” “Whether... Read more »
