Zombie-themed demo release may spark future controversy
By Jeff Wade,September 2, 2010
“Dead Rising 2: Case Zero” looks like a demo, feels like a demo and plays like a demo. But publisher Capcom does not want anyone to call it a demo. The Xbox 360-exclusive download “Case Zero” finds the focus shifted to a new protagonist motocross and extreme sports hero Chuck Greene. Fleeing the recently quarantined Las Vegas with daughter Katey, Chuck finds himself stranded in the small town of Still Creek. Forced not only with killing hordes of zombies and a need to escape, Chuck must... Read more »
Punk Artist Goes Solo at TDU
By Jeff Wade,April 26, 2010
Playing solo in the cozy coffee house setting of TDU this week, Arthur Carl Enders breezed through a solo set that saw the prolific punk play to a hushed and reverent crowd. Enders had a storied career in the music industry, and he has a large song book number of pseudonyms to prove it. Enders is perhaps most notable for his role in the millennial emo band The Early November. Under his current nom de plume “Ace,” the musician played a stripped-down set of songs that catered to many of his prior... Read more »
Helping through Hoops
By Jeff Wade,April 19, 2010
The combination of student athletes’ endurance and the generosity of benefactors made this weekend’s Drive for 25 event a buzzer-beater on hunger. Spearheaded by JMU students under the umbrella of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Drive for 25 was a 25-hour basketball game, food drive and fund raiser organized to send to aid orphanages in Mozambique, as well as benefit local children with the help of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. This club reaches out... Read more »
‘Kick-Ass’ Lives Up to Its Title
By Jeff Wade,April 19, 2010
The question that serves as the spark for the violent and hilarious “Kick-Ass” is: Why aren’t there any superheroes? After seeing the movie, one might still ask the same thing. Based on the comic book by Mark Miller, “Kick-Ass” reveals how the unspectacular Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) transforms into the world’s first superhero who lacks superpowers. Fed up with the rampant crime in New York City, Lizewski modifies a wetsuit, takes the alter-ego of Kick-Ass and sets out to clean up... Read more »
Disastrous ‘Room’ Still Fosters Cult Following
By Jeff Wade,April 15, 2010
It’s fitting that Monday’s screening of “The Room” took place in the psychology offices of Miller Hall. The film is both a failed experiment and fascinating look into the psyche of one of the most bizarre men to ever step on either side of a camera. Let one thing be immediately clear: “The Room” is one of the worst movies ever made. Not coincidently, it is also one of the most entertaining. The film has fostered a cult audience on the back of nationwide midnight screenings. Written,... Read more »
Students Take Each Other On in ‘Smash’ Tournament
By Jeff Wade,April 12, 2010
Thursday night’s rain may have lacked thunder, but there was plenty in Festival’s lower drum, as competitors attempted to prove their skill at “Super Smash Bros.” Throughout Festival were multiple stations laden with Nintendo 64s, the three-pronged controllers and copies of the addictive game. The N64 classic depicting the eternally fruitless struggle among Nintendo mascots was brought kicking and screaming out of dorm rooms and basements for an evening that was devoted to both competition... Kline’s Dairy Bar has been serving its trademark ice cream since 1943, and its enduring popularity has made it a Harrisonburg landmark. Forty-Eight Hours of Independence
By Jeff Wade,April 5, 2010
More than Just the Music Music wasn’t the only thing on display during the second day of MACRoCk. In many ways, Saturday was when MACRoCk got down to business, with a smattering of panels, workshops and seminars. Sprawled across downtown Harrisonburg, these events covered the spectrum of the indie music community, ranging from how to record and sell albums, to sessions on the community’s photography scene. Tucked into Wonder Skate Shop and kicking off the Saturday afternoon festivity was a panel... Read more »
Disorganized 3-D Clashes with Epic Myth
By Jeff Wade,April 5, 2010
“Clash of the Titans” suffers from three clichés that are becoming increasingly prevalent in Hollywood. The checklist of clichés? Sam Worthington as a lead to a multi-million dollar spectacle, an unnecessary remake of an earlier film and ineffectual and unnecessary 3-D. “Clash of the Titans,” a rehash of the 1981 flick of the same name, follows the tale of Perseus (Sam Worthington “Avatar,” “Terminator: Salvation”), who is the bastard son of the surprisingly sparkly god Zeus (Liam... We Dance Circles Around You
By Jeff Wade,March 29, 2010
Words don’t usually lend themselves to describing breakdancing. It’s a kinetic and personal form of self-expression, yet also an utterly unique and part of a larger shared culture. There isn’t any sort of vocabulary or agreed upon nomenclature to describe the myriad of motions in a single routine. And it’s because of Circles 11 that I have to try and do it anyway. Circles, now in its 11th iteration, is the annual celebration of breakdancing and the culture surrounding it. Hosted by JMU’s... Read more »
