Memorial Hall Hosts Funk, Blues, Soul
By Jess Novak, The BreezeApril 23, 2009
Harrisonburg is fortunate to enjoy a thriving music scene. Bluegrass, rock, punk, jazz and classical genres can be heard both on campus and around the town. However, funk is one genre that does not frequent this community, making the Point Blank Productions show held on Monday night at Memorial Hall a rare and enjoyable gem. As soon as funk and blues icon, Cyril Neville took the stage, the audience reacted in the only appropriate way: by dancing. Point Blank Productions is an entirely student-run... Read more »

Held Tuesday in the Grafton-Stovall Theater, the annual event provides a venue for global concerns. “I actually thought of the name while talking to my brother,” said junior Danny Lampton, the head-coordinator. “I couldn’t think of anything to call it and he just told me to ‘take the pulse’ of the JMU community and their feelings toward global... Trading Tradition and Culture

Students traveling south to JMU on Interstate 81 have probably seen it at some point. There is something intriguing about a giant teepee right off exit 269. It turns out there is more to this teepee than meets the eye. Not only is it the site of a major powwow every year, featuring more than 200 dancers and more than 30 vendors, but the building behind it is open daily as a Native American Trading Post. “This is an outlet for Native American culture,” owner Beth Armagost said. “Many people... Sociology professor Don DePoy and his wife, Martha Hills, began “Bluegrass Jams,” sponsored by the music department at JMU, last fall as part of DePoy’s culture of music course, which required students to attend various impromptu music sessions in the area. “Bluegrass...
