HARRISONBURG, Va. — The groups of freshmen and sophomores leaving campus Friday night were fewer and farther between than in past years. As they approached the corner of campus at Port Republic Road, ready for a night out, they were greeted unexpectedly by other students and faculty. But the message wasn’t to stay home or even not to drink. Instead, the groups were advised to stay together and to stay safe. “I’m not trying to scare you all into staying in your dorms,” said junior Rheanna... Read more »

Rose Defines the University’s Values as a Foundation to Recover from Springfest HARRISONBURG, Va. — President Linwood Rose wants to get down to the “heart of the problem” that tarnished JMU’s reputation, led to dozens of arrests and broke down mutual respect between the community and the university. That problem, Rose said Tuesday, is what JMU has tried for years to combat: open door parties. On April 10 — the day of Springfest and the ensuing riot — Rose said his students’ safety... Read more »

Top Ten: 4 Arboretum
By Katie Thisdell, The BreezeApril 8, 2010
The daffodils. That’s what I go to the arboretum to see. The yellows, whites and oranges are like another form of Vitamin D. A patch of these little bursts of sunshine sit right at the front of the arboretum, greeting visitors during the first weeks of April. It’s the place to go whether you’re happy or sad, whether you’re homesick or in love. There’s something about how nature has the power to affect your feelings and your life. Springtime offers even more beauty: blooming flowers of... Read more »

The ‘Perfect Storm’ in a Sea of Alcohol
By Katie Thisdell, The BreezeMarch 4, 2010
Faculty Discuss Alcohol, Academics Relationship HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Sunday morning sea of red Solo cups and aluminum cans littering stairwells, lawns and streets proclaims JMU’s off-campus culture. “That was a fun party last night!” the relics scream. JMU is sometimes thought to have a “work hard, play hard” culture. It’s a culture of alcohol, of being known as a great party school, and of brunch-time relivings of what happened the night before. But some faculty members are asking... Read more »

Discovered It Was Gone Tuesday HARRISONBURG, Va. — One Harrisonburg resident wants her treasured stars and stripes back.
