Bow Hunting Safer Option in City
By Ryan Platt,January 21, 2010
HARRISONBURG, Va. — Hunting deer with bows and arrows is coming to Harrisonburg in full force. As long as hunters get landowner’s permission, JMU students could be seeing bow hunters near their very own backyards, but university land itself is exempt. Harrisonburg City Council passed an ordinance Jan. 12 allowing deer archery in the city. Mayor Kai Degner cast the only dissenting vote. “I don’t really see a need for it,” Degner said. “If property owners had a means to request permission... Read more »
Protest Out of Place
By Ryan Platt,January 19, 2010
I, as an American citizen, fully believe in the concept of first amendment rights. Free speech is a vital part of this country’s way of life, and any restrictions on said rights would be in violation of the very fabric of the society in which we live. People have a right to their opinions, and they have every right to share those opinions publicly, equally, and freely. However, with that said, I also believe there is a time and a place to voice those opinions. If you found yourself walking in the... Read more »
SGA Debates Funding as a Show of Support
By Ryan Platt,November 19, 2009
HARRISONBURG, Va. — Does giving money to an organization mean SGA supports the organization’s intentions? That’s what senators debated during Tuesday’s meeting when JMU’s Relay for Life members asked for a grant for a letter-writing campaign. SGA distributes special program grants, which help organizations fund events that benefit the campus. Events include the Breakdance Club’s “Circles 11” and the Latino Student Alliance’s “Celebración Latina.” The total request from Relay... Read more »

HDPT: No More Cuts to Bus Hours
By Ryan Platt,November 12, 2009
With the results still being analyzed from the recent SGA survey that attempted to gauge student opinions on the adjustments to the late night buses, the biggest question remains: Has the change made a difference? Reggie Smith, director of the Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation, explained that for one thing, the demand has not changed. During Halloween weekend, 15,000 passengers rode during the day Friday, with about 6,000 more riding the night bus, and 11,000 during the day on Saturday.... Read more »
