Through the doors of the East Campus dining hall is a modern, all-you-can-eat for a punch buffet. The recessed ceiling, low-lit atmosphere and made-to-order meals set this dining establishment apart from the other eateries around campus. Las Chamas: Affordable and Enjoyable

Sizzling plantains and the smell of roasted meat attack the senses upon entering Arepera Las Chamas. Located downtown across from Wachovia and next to Franklin’s Cafe and Wine Bar, the restaurant is owned by Venezuelan natives Maria Chaves and Josefa Herrera. Chaves owned a restaurant similar to Las Chamas when she lived in Venezuela and has changed very little of the menu from the original restaurant. Tar Heels End Madison’s Five-Game Win Streak On a cold, windy day UNC field hockey iced JMU 2-0. The Dukes were on a five-game winning streak coming into the game and are in a three-way tie for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association. The loss highlights the team’s struggles against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents, who they are 0-3 against this year and were 1-3 last year. Saturday Vandalism Leaves Cars with Thousands of Dollars in Damage HARRISONBURG, Va. — After nine windshields were smashed early Saturday morning on campus, police continue to search for the alleged suspect. At 12:50 a.m. Saturday, JMU Police received the vandalism report for the cars parked in the R8 and C9 lots. Glenda Rooney, the assistant to the Proctor for JMU, has come out of retirement twice to help plan events like Monday’s Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award presentation. Financial Aid Bill Passed

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Paying for college could soon be easier for millions of American students due to the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act. The House of Representatives passed the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (H.R. 3221) Sept. 17 with a vote of 253-171. The bill claims to make college more accessible by investing money in primary education while saving taxpayers $87 billion dollars over the next 10 years. As of now, more than 7,000 people will attend the Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award Monday, yet few will know the preparation it took to put on the event. Bringing high-profile individuals such as Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter to JMU requires months of planning as well as the cooperation of multiple departments and agencies. On Sept. 21, former president Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter will be the second recipients of the Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award from JMU’s Mahatma Gandhi Center. The award is presented every two years to individuals who have worked to promote and spread peace and nonviolence.
