Under the Lights for First Time, JMU Falls to Nation’s No. 1
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeMarch 18, 2010
JMU more than doubled its previous attendance record in the first ever Madison baseball game held under the lights. Facing the No. 1 team in the nation, the Dukes were unable to give the capacity crowd at Veterans Memorial Park the result it wanted. Officially, 1,815 were on hand to watch the Dukes fall to the U.Va. 6-3 Wednesday night in Harrisonburg. Many were turned away at the gates as the stadium reached its capacity, however, an additional estimated 450 fans lined the outfield grass beyond... Read more »
20 Years After Their Last Title, Dukes Crowned Champions
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeMarch 18, 2010
After Conquering the CAA, JMU Moves Ahead to NCAA Tournament A wave of excitement roared through the Convocation Center on Monday night when the words “James Madison” finally appeared on ESPN’s telecast of the Women’s NCAA Tournament Selection Show. While a No. 9 seed and favorable geographic location were enough to satisfy those in attendance for JMU’s selection-show viewing party, attention immediately shifted to Madison’s potential second-round opponent: Big East and national powerhouse... Slow Start To Season
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeMarch 18, 2010
Prior to the season’s start, conference coaches voted JMU the favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association title. However, Madison has failed to perform at the level expected, sitting at 5-8 entering last night’s contest against national No. 1 U.Va. (Game results can be found on breeze.jmu.org). While JMU’s win-loss mark is slightly misleading due to a relatively strong early-season schedule, which included losses to No. 12 Coastal Carolina and No. 6 University of California Irvine, much... Dukes Top Tribe on Senior Night
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeMarch 1, 2010
The first time the JMU women’s basketball team traveled to Williamsburg, it was upset by William & Mary. Sunday afternoon, with one major addition, Madison was able to hold off the Tribe and all but solidify the No. 2 seed in next week’s conference tournament. Dawn Evans had 25 points after missing the Feb. 11 matchup with an ankle injury, and the Dukes (22-6 overall and 12-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association) defeated W&M (9-19, 4-13) 71-59 in their final home game of the regular... Jimenez, Evans Take Dukes Past VCU
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeFebruary 26, 2010
Recovering from a broken nose that kept her sidelined for JMU’s last three games, Lauren Jimenez didn’t know what kind of minutes to expect entering her first action since Feb. 11. Luckily for her, and for the Dukes, JMU got into early foul trouble and the junior found her way onto the floor. Jimenez’s 16 points and six rebounds helped lead Madison to a 79-72 victory over VCU on Thursday night at the Convocation Center. With the win, JMU improves to 11-5 and gains sole possession of second... Read more »
JMU Makes Statement with Early Domination
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeFebruary 25, 2010
Following JMU’s 16-3 win over Virginia Tech, both coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe and junior attacker Mary Kate Lomady referred to the Hokies as an in-state rival. The “rivalry,” however, is as one-sided as one can get. Madison earned its second straight season-opening victory over Tech on Wednesday afternoon, improving its series record to 8-0 against the Hokies. The teams began competing against each other in 2001, and have met in each of the past seven seasons. The 13-point margin of victory... Read more »
JMU Shuts Down CAA Star in Win Over Drexel
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeFebruary 12, 2010
Dawn Evans made yet another statement with her play Monday — this time in front of the Colonial Athletic Association’s all-time leading scorer. Drexel (8-3 in CAA, 14-8 overall) senior forward Gabriela Marginean surpassed JMU’s Tamera Young (’07) as the all-time leading scorer in January. In Madison’s (8-3, 18-4) first meeting with the Dragons since Young’s mark was broken, Evans showed why the CAA crown will likely return to Harrisonburg by the time the junior’s career at JMU ends. As... Read more »
JMU Takes Down Tigers
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeFebruary 1, 2010
While the JMU women’s basketball team participated in shooting drills during practice Friday afternoon, coach Kenny Brooks used the time to send his team a message: Forget about what happened the night before, and concentrate on Sunday’s game. With help from his iHome and Jay-Z’s “On to the Next One” blasting through its speakers, the Dukes’ apparently heard Brooks’ message loud and clear. JMU bounced back from an overtime loss to Hofstra on Thursday, which gave the Dukes’ a two-game... Read more »
JMU Cannot Recover From Monarchs’ Fast First Half
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeJanuary 19, 2010
JMU coach Kenny Brooks said in Monday’s press conference that he has received multiple e-mails telling him to “keep his head up” after Sunday’s 67-58 loss to Old Dominion. He chuckled as he reminded the room that his team’s record was 13-3. “We had a situation like this last year, where we got beat, we got beat to a drum by VCU, and the kids bounced back,” Brooks said. “We responded from that, and you know, maybe that was a wake-up call, maybe this is a wake-up call.” The game was... Dukes Take Two From Flames
By Wes Shaw, The BreezeApril 9, 2009
After being swept by the visiting Panthers of Georgia State this weekend, Madison took both ends of its doubleheader against the Liberty Flames on Wednesday afternoon. JMU won game one 4-1 behind a complete-game, four-hitter from senior right-hander Jenny Clohan. She also had an RBI double in Madison’s 2-1 victory in game two. The wins increase the Dukes’ record to 22-11 this season. Game two’s key play came in the bottom of the sixth inning when a passed ball allowed freshman shortstop Ashley... Read more »
