Opinionated?
By The Breeze Editorial Board,March 1, 2010
The editorial board of a publication can become institutionalized and opinions often grow stale. In order to gain a fresh outlook and better gauge thoughts and concerns of those on campus, we would like to extend an invitation to all students, faculty and staff to apply for a new guest position on the editorial board. The position would require meetings with the board twice weekly for one month to discuss topics and choose the board’s stance on issues important to the JMU community. Each month... Read more »
Give and Take
By The Breeze Editorial Board,March 1, 2010
We would like to commend Virginia 21, the JMU SGA and all of the students around the state who met with legislators about the damage that would be done by the state confiscating 5 percent of the university’s auxiliary fund balances. While it looks like the state will keep the interest these funds earn, they will not appropriate extant funds that go toward athletics, dining, housing, parking, bus transportation and other functions receiving no state support. Unfortunately, in giving with one hand,... Read more »
Global Unification
By The Breeze Editorial Board,February 25, 2010
With the Winter Olympics coming to a close on Sunday, it is coming down to the wire on what could be a historically winning year for Americans. Already surpassing the 25 medals they claimed in Turin, Italy in 2006, Americans are on track to take the most they’ve ever received — more than the 34 gained in Salt Lake City in 2002. The Olympics exhibit a global camaraderie, with more than 2,600 athletes from 82 nations participating. This worldwide competition helps set problems aside, letting... Read more »
Don’t Forget
By The Breeze Editorial Board,February 25, 2010
Amid recent events — the Olympics and the hype of Snooki’s arrival — it’s easy for students to forget that Haitians still need aid, be it money, food or medical attention. It is important students and capable activists stay focused on the issue at hand; those in need should not be forgotten, simply because they’ve fallen from the limelight. While it’s unrealistic to expect anyone to constantly donate, effective aid doesn’t stop after the first month; it is a steady stream of funds... Read more »
A Worthwhile Welcome
By The Breeze Editorial Board,February 22, 2010
Welcome Nicole Polizzi, We hope your visit is worth your fee — we appreciate the 10 percent discount off what you normally charge. We are not sure how much implicit endorsement of your public persona will affect JMU’s image as a party school, but we must admit that a large number of JMU students not only engage in such a lifestyle on the weekends, but would also be entertained by your visit to our campus. Based on the comments posted on Facebook and press-releases, it appears the student body... Read more »
Own Up
By The Breeze Editorial Board,February 18, 2010
Central to our role of being a voice for students, The Breeze, like many other media outlets, allows the posting of reader comments on stories at our Website. This encourages the free expression of ideas and engenders debate, serving to strengthen our society. Unfortunately, a minority exploits this venue for free expression as an opportunity to spread hate. At Virginia Tech, The Collegiate Times nearly lost its school funding when the editors allowed racist and bigoted comments to remain anonymously... Read more »
Shoveling Citations
By The Breeze Editorial Board,February 15, 2010
The City of Harrisonburg will begin issuing citations for unshoveled sidewalks today. An ordinance says sidewalks must be shoveled within three hours of snowfall ending or by 10 a.m., if the snowfall occurred overnight. Failing to remove ice and snow may result in a Class 4 misdemeanor, which has a maximum $250 fine. Because of the increased snowstorm frequency this year, the city has given residents more leeway. However, the ice-covered sidewalks and pathways have become dangerous to pedestrians... Read more »
A Civic Duty
By The Breeze Editorial Board,February 12, 2010
We encourage students to fill out the 2010 Census that will arrive in mailboxes in the coming weeks. While the Census serves to count the population, the information gathered from the survey is also used to allocate seats in the House of Representatives, having an immediate effect on Harrisonburg. Counting students as Harrisonburg residents allows the city to receive funds for transportation, hospitals and emergency services, among other things. If students don’t fill out the Census, Harrisonburg... Read more »
Path to Victory
By The Breeze Editorial Board,February 8, 2010
Congratulations all around on the most recent developments surrounding the late-night bus service to Student Services Committee of the SGA and the JMU student body. Thanks to the SGA for putting together a useful survey that allowed the voice of the entire student body to be heard. We also extend our praise to all students who took the time to sift through the multitude of e-mails requesting survey responses and actually filled this one out. The survey clearly showed that taking away the late-night... Read more »
Student Responsibility
By The Breeze Editorial Board,February 4, 2010
Virginia tech adopted a new policy as a result of parents’ requests. The policy states that parents will be notified when students under 21 are punished for any alcohol-or drug-related violations. The university previously had a “three-strike” policy similar to ours, in which parents are notified after a second offense. This approach seems more effective in creating a more responsible environment for students. The majority of students begin their college careers at age 18, meaning they are... Read more »
