Editorial: This is our home

In the wake of Yeardley Love’s murder in May at U.Va. , the university has instituted a policy of requesting criminal information from its students each semester. Should JMU pursue a similar policy for its own students? While it may at first seem to be a breach of privacy, criminal records are a matter of public record. The administration should have the ability to inform the student body of previous criminal records. These changes would hopefully provide a safer environment and engage a system... Read more »
Soccer is more than just a sport
By Elizabeth Baugh, The BreezeSeptember 2, 2010
It’s time to accept soccer as a sport, America. No more excuses. re made about the future of soccer in the United States. And every four years Americans make the same excuses about why they won’t let soccer rise to the next level. Maybe it goes back to the Revolutionary War, and America didn’t want to accept anything relating to Europe, even sports. Even though soccer’s governing body, the International Federation of Association Football, is a European association, the rest of the world... Read more »
Christians in camo commandeering military
By Elizabeth Baugh, The BreezeSeptember 2, 2010
During basic training, I remember the great lengths my fellow soldiers and I would go to in order to relax and escape from our drill sergeants. People would make a minor cold sound like the final throes of pneumonia in order to reach the haven of sick call for a few hours. But the easiest getaway from the stresses of the barracks came every Sunday morning when the buses for religious services arrived. For the heathens like myself that remained in the barracks, instead of a relaxing morning like those... Read more »
Darts & Pats
By Darts & Pats,September 2, 2010
A “you-make-my-heart-leap” pat to all the FROGs for their boundless dedication. From a 2009 FROG who jumps for joy at the sight of those yellow shirts. A “not-everything-about-your-dog-is-cute” dart to whoever didn’t clean up after their puppy on the Quad. From a junior who should’ve worn shoes. A “why-do-you-hurt-me-when-I-love-you-so-much?” dart to my Silly Bandz. From a girl who wishes she could wear 40, but doesn’t have strong enough blood flow for that. A “you-came-from-the-heavens”... Let’s set this straight
By Cameron Clarke,September 2, 2010
By now, I’m sure you’ve all heard about the proposal to build a mosque and Islamic community center at ground zero in New York City. That’s right. NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has approved plans to erect a mosque RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of ground zero. Can you believe it? This is just an unbelievable proposal. I can’t understand how anyone — wait. Hang on a minute. I’ve just received word that (wait, really?) the mosque and Islamic community center is NOT being proposed at ground zero. It... Read more »
Editorial: A new JMU
By The Breeze Editorial Board,August 30, 2010
We all like to have fun. That’s a fact of life at JMU or at any college. Spending time with new friends outside the classroom offers some of the most important experiences of college. But maybe it’s time for us to realize that there comes a point when “too much fun” can lead to some major problems. The university’s new alcohol initiatives are a promising idea to make our campus and community a better place. As much as we don’t want to see our parties broken up, our friends ticketed for... Five years later, JMU’s work still not done
By Dan Smolkin,August 30, 2010
Volunteers make all the difference in rebuilding New Orleans. Five years ago this week, Hurricane Katrina hit the city of New Orleans, my hometown, and the Gulf Coast region with unprecedented force. The protective levee system failed, flooding 80 percent of the city leaving hundreds of thousands displaced. Many speculated that it would be 10 years before the city fully recovered. Now the city is just approaching the condition it was in before the storm. This incredible progress is largely due to... Read more »
Remembering who we are
By Sean Dolan,August 30, 2010
The Republican Party’s religious intolerance should not countermand our nation’s religious freedoms. In years past on Sept. 11, ground zero in lower Manhattan has been a place for public tributes, memorial events and grieving families. However, this year will be different. Patriotism will be replaced with intolerance, remembrance replaced with ignorance, sorrow with fear. Pamela Geller, a conservative blogger, has been planning a Sept. 11 rally on the northeast corner of ground zero to protest... Read more »
